Royalton, Vermont (Windsor County) Old Plat Map

Post by RhondaCarter »

Attached are two maps. Unfortunately the files I have are not the clearest, but wanted to show where the Hibbard family was located. You will see mention of them in an article regarding the Burning of Royalton which occurred 16 Oct 1780, before the dawn of day, the inhabitants were approached by about 300 Indians of various tribes, led by the Caghnewaga tribe.

On December 20, 1781, John Hibbard (Sr.) and his son (Elder) John Hibbard (Jr.) and James Hibbard (John Sr.'s brother) along with others acquired their lands under the New York charter. The town of Royalton as granted and chartered by Vermont had not the same area as under the New York charter, for it was found out that, had the same territory been granted, it would have overlapped the town lands of Bethel, on the west side. To remedy this, two tiers of lots were taken off from the town and laid out under the New York survey, thus reducing the area of Royalton.
